7月8日 The exploding mobile phone - one for the kids...err...notThis story from today's Hindustan Times demonstrates why you should not use counterfeit or inappropriate batteries for your mobile. Having (a) just bought a new Nokia N95 and (b) ordered a new battery for my old Samsung Z510, this is an apt moment for me to ponder the health and safety risks involved! This woman survived the exploding mobile, which was in her pocket, but what if it had been in use against her ear? Nokia are investigating. Has your mobile caused any accident? Leave me a comment if it has - even if it was by tripping up a centipede! 6月14日 Why bother to insure your mobile? Most people in Britain - two out of three it is suggested - do not have mobile phone insurance. Apparently this is usually because it is simply too expensive. Yet there are nearly one million mobile thefts every year! I wonder what the statistical probability of theft is given that the UK has 60 million people and not all of them will own a phone but, also, many people now have more than one mobile phone! Kids too. Home insurance does not necessarily cover your phone! Has your phone been stolen and if so, did your insurance cover it? I'd be interested to know if anybody has had to battle their insurer to have them pay out. 6月7日 nearly one million mobile phones flushed down the loo every yearFinance News online tells us the following about phones being dropped down the lav every year! Or read it for yourself here folks. Excuse me, call of nature.....(..."hello, hello...?...")
Mobile phone losses costing Brits dearly |
What I want from my mobile phone |

This is a plea to all mobile phone manufactures: make me a phone with everything I want, and do it cheaply. I want a phone with fast, responsive software that doesn't freeze up, a QWERTY keyboard, a hi-res camera, and I want it all in a small, compact case. I also want it to cost less than Dh3,000.
I'll give Nokia credit for coming the closest so far with the soon-to-be-released E90. During a recent interview I was shown a prototype.
Don't bother looking for it at the store yet. It hasn't hit the market, and when it does, be prepared to open your wallet. The person I talked to said Nokia was still evaluating the price but to expect something in the Dh3,000 range.
Nokia's other contender for my money was the N73. It offers quite a lot for Dh1,400, including a 3.2 megapixel camera. For years manufactures have been using useless, lo-res cameras, so I like the idea of having a mobile that can product printable photos. Nokia also makes a phone with 5.0 megapixel camera, the N95, but I'm sorry, a 50 per cent increase in resolution does not equal a 220 per cent increase in the cost (Dh3,000).
The only bad thing I've heard about Nokia's camera is the software that syncs the phone to the computer. A friend bought the N73 when it was new on the market. She loved it, until she tried to install the software. We're not quite sure what happened, but it looks like the software tried to over-write the videocard driver on the computer. A patch was quickly made to fix the problem, but that didn't make up for the lost time or general chaos the install had caused.
No mobile seems to score high in this category. Palm also seems to be having trouble producing software that works right out of the box.
The Palm had to be the most disappointing mobile on the market. I've used Palms for years, and the Treo I purchased six months ago was my third model. At Dh1,999, I expected a lot of this phone. What I got was clunky, often non-responsive software, frequent lock-ups that required me to remove the battery, and growing sense of paranoia about losing the stylus (Dh50-plus for a replacement pack of three). I tried to upgrade the firmware (the software that runs the machine, as opposed to the OS software), but after four hours and several words than can not be reproduced here, I saw absolutely no difference what so ever. Maybe the newer models of the Treo have worked out the bugs, but I'm not betting Dh1,500 on it.
The iMate looks promising, but I'm just not sold on the idea that I need a high-end processor in my mobile yet. I don't need to number crunch on my mobile, and for phones in the Dh1,500-Dh3,000 range, I just don't see enough options to make me choose an iMate over a Nokia or a Motorola.
In the end I decided to go with the Motorola RAZR v6 (Dh1,399). I'm still not sure I made the right choice, but I like having a small, compact phone, and if nothing else, Motorola has always been reliable. Motorola's software has never given me grief, once I figured out how to use it, and at the end of the day, reliability is what I need. |
Comments (3) Children have always been taught to work out how near they are to a dangerous electrical storm by counting the seconds between the thunder and the flash of lightning.
Now there is a more modern solution to the summer hazard of lightning strikes - the mobile phone.
Phone makers, not content with offering email, camera, video recorder and a host of other options on their high-tech handsets, have developed a phone which can alert the user to the threat of a lightning strike by sounding an alarm telling the person to move to safety.

It is likely to be a boon to outdoor enthusiasts such as golfers and anglers who are most at risk because they often tend to be away from shelter.
In the UK, five people are killed each year after being struck by lightning and dozens more are injured.
The new handset detects radio waves given off by lightning up to hundreds of miles away. The pattern of the waves changes as a storm gets nearer and the alarm sounds.
Nokia says: "Many of the most dangerous lightning strikes occur when no visible clouds are present above as a warning of a thunderstorm.
"Thus, a system that warns of potential harmful thunderstorms, even if only approximately ten minutes before they become visible, can be considered a major safety feature."
Many people are caught because lightning can strike from clear skies as far as six miles from where rain is falling.
A typical bolt has the power of a billion watts - enough to light 10 million lightbulbs.
Between 30 and 60 people a year survive lightning strikes in the UK but more than three-quarters of them suffer a permanent disability, such as brain damage or paralysis.
In 2003, a man was left in a coma for a week and most of the bones in his face were shattered after he was hit by lightning while running around a park in Liverpool.
And in September 1999, two young Thai women were found dead under a tree in Hyde Park, London, after being struck by lightning while sheltering from a storm.
The lightning alarm is the latest in a string of unusual uses for mobile phones. Last week a text message service was announced that will warn sunlovers when they risk getting burnt.
It will receive updates of UV intensity from local phone masts and sound a warning when mobile users who have signed up to the service have spent too long outside in the sun.
A spokesman for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents said: "For people who are out and about playing golf or fishing, if you have an early warning, at least you can be aware before the storm strikes.
"But the important thing is to know what to do if a lightning storm is threatening.
"There is some basic advice: try to find shelter in a brick building or in your car if it is close, because the tyres should provide insulation.
"People should not shelter under trees."
Now this is exactly the sort of story I love to read...how weird is this! I have a feeling it will become a tourist attraction!
It should be the perfect spot to sit down and escape the hustle and bustle of modern life.
But if you're looking for a little tranquillity in the village of East Prawle then steer clear of the bench on the green.
For hovering above the seat is the only mobile phone signal for miles around.

On the bench: the only way East Prawle residents can currently get a mobile phone signal
It means that the once-peaceful spot is frequently filled with the sound of chatter - and queues reminiscent of an old-fashioned telephone box - as villagers take turns to climb on to the bench to make a call.
Now the parish council has been forced to take action after an elderly resident complained that the bench was no longer being used for its original purpose - and was often covered in muddy footprints.
Councillors in the South Devon village have voted to move the bench to the other side of the green and put a special phone podium in its place.
The £100, 2ft-high concrete block, complete with steps, will be installed at the precise spot where callers can get coverage.
David Hampden Smith, chairman of Chivelstone Parish Council, explained: "We have never been able to get a signal in the village.
"Now one has been found, we have decided to put a podium there because the bench is getting ruined with everyone clambering on to it.
"£100 is a lot of money for a small community council but it seems that everyone wanted it.
"Lots of people are using the park bench to make important phone calls."
East Prawle, population 200, has two pubs and a small shop and its remote coastal location makes it popular with tourists.
It is believed the bench's unique quality was discovered by a holidaymaker who spread the information around nearby campsites.
The phone signal can be found only by standing on the bench and facing west.
Richard Cordy, 65, a retired shop owner in the village, said: "It is a bit embarrassing for people to have to climb on to a park bench but it's the only way.
"The residents here have been waiting ten years for a phone signal and visitors are always grumbling about it."
"There was even a small queue of people wanting to use their phone at the weekend. It is all a bit mad really."

Manchester
Well what a past few nights i have had. Usually when i get stressed out i tend to piss off somewhere to think, valentines day was no exception. I went to the Coach and Four in Wilmslow and got a Room there. Basically because me and Louise fell out over the fact we never speak.Coach and Four was nice enough but Louise put the phone down on me and i decided to goto Manchester, what a suprise. I got a taxi up there about midnight and i wanted to goto an all night club but the only one i know of is a strip joint, dont really mind that, not because they have women stripping but you get your drinks brought to you which is cool.Anyway...the strip joint was closed and i tried like 4 others which were closed as well, typical. The only other place which was open late was in Chinatown so i ended up there. Got into this place and was having a beer and everyone looked a bit gay to me, was only after about 20 minutes i decided to ask the Barman if it was a gay bar, as you can imagine it was, as is every Bar in Chinatown. Just goes to show how often I goto Manchester really, and how little i goto Chinatown. The highlight of the evening for me was wandering from club to club with a lad who i met in a gay bar, he was straight though i think because he had a girlfriend, he was like me, just looking for a quiet pint which was useless because they wouldnt let us in anywhere. After a while i got pissed off walking around and i went up to this club / Bar and slipped the Bouncer £20 and said "So looks like we will be getting in then i think" and he let us in lol. Not that i usually go round slipping cash to beefheads but it was late and i was hacked off with going from bar to bar in the cold.Rang up my mate while i was in there to get a room for the night. To be honest was only in there about an hour before they started booting people out, what happened to 24 hour service?Skip forward a bit and i met a guy outside, drug dealer, oh boy!!!!! Anyway i ended up with his number on my phone and he said he would get me some weed, which was good because to be honest i dont know anyone that can get me any. All my ties with that side of my life have been gone for years.Next day my mobile was out, battery had gone so i went into Manchester and stuck my phone in a shop for them to charge it up. Cheeky bastard i know but i had to phone Louise up so what do you do? Anyway they charged it for me and that guy (Drug Dealer) rang me so i told him where i was and that i wanted some weed, trouble is i never stayed where i said i was going to be and instead i went to see Debs as she was only 10 minutes in a cab. Debs is into Art and i said i would help her get her work published, which isnt easy nowadays. I saw debs as me 10 years ago, into her art in a big way. Had a look at her artwork and showed her mine online, she seemed impressed. As usual i ended up talking about louise and showed her some Pictures of her.Wasnt long before Brian (Drug Dealer) rang me up wanting to know where i was, told him i was in Salford, he didnt sound happy because he went in to town to meet me and i had dissapeared. He turned up at Debs flat to get me some weed, I gave him 50 notes and he gave me his mobile as collateral, thing is about an hour had passed and there was no sign of him and Debs had a friend coming round so i had to go, which wasnt ideal really as i didnt know how to get hold of Brian and Salford isnt the best place to be.I had no choice but to get a Taxi home in the end, I thought he had done a runner with the money anyway and i was to knackered to care at that point.Got home and Debs rang me saying that Brian had turned up at her flat and wasnt leaving until he got his phone back. She wasnt very happy as you can imagine. Trouble is i couldnt go back up there and he was pretty pissed off, he thought i had done a runner with his phone and he needed it. I told him he would have to meet me in Wilmslow which again he was pissed off about as thats another trip. At this point i was crapping myself which isnt like me, normally i dont give a fuck but this guy meant buisness. So i had managed to piss off a drug dealer, i had his phone, i pissed Debs off and Louise wasnt to happy with me either. I was absalutely shattered emotionally and physically and i was scared incase this guy pulled a knife on me.I had to go to the coach and four to meet him, he had my weed but to be honest i just wanted to give him back his phone and go home to bed to talk to Louise. Maybe i am getting soft in my old age i dunno. All i remember thinking is that i had no back up incase this guy decided to have a pop, i wouldnt mind but he was 6ft 3 and looked a bit evil. Coach and Four is busy though so i didnt see any trouble happening in there and if it did i know a few people in there that would jump in.When he turned up i explained to him that i had no choice but to come back home, i could see he was pissed off and he told me he had my weed but he wanted me to give him money to get back to Manchester, i told him i would give him a tenner but he asked for 20 notes. Stupidly he saw i had a load of 20's in my wallet and grabbed it and took 60 Quid. At that point i stood up and went to the bar to phone the Police, either that or risk it and get into a fight. Personally i didnt want to spend time in the cells so i thought i would do things the proper way for a change.Police turned up and wanted my side of the story. Obviously i didnt tell them about the weed but they were making out it was my fault. Thats just typical of the cops really, youre the victim and its your fault. Great. Anyway they took me home after that and i dont know if they were going to go after him or not. They never said, just that they would be in touch. Basically ive lost my 60 quid plus the 50 quid i gave him for the weed.I guess you have to learn not to get involved with drugs, i know its only weed and i wanted to get some simply because i dont want to drink anymore. I thought weed would chill me out and when louise comes down we could smoke it together. Doesnt look like thats going to happen now.I suppose i will have to goto London to see Louise, although i dont really want to go. She did mention it. She wants me to go there but i dont feel ready to go. Its the School holidays next week and she wants me to go there. I dont mind going there, if it wasnt for the damn Underground i wouldnt be so stressed. I suppose also i am worried of how i am going to be when i am there. Recently i have been very tired and under alot of stress. So much has been happening with me and Louise that i dont know what to do anymore. If Louise was to come here and i was to go back with her then i would be ok with that, she relaxes me. Its just going on my own thats the scary part. London is scary. I dont know what to do, more stress for me. I dont want to let her down, i keep saying i will goto see her if she asks me and now she has im a bit freaked out about it. But if i dont go and see her then i have let her down.I dont know what to do really, my life is so complicated at the moment. It doesnt seem to be getting an easier either. So many people will probably wonder what i have to be bothered about and lets face it i dont have to be bothered about much. Or do i?
From the Daily Telegraph on 09 April 2007:
Up to 60,000 people headed to Bournemouth in Dorset to sunbathe and walk along the beach. Resorts in north Devon, the Gower in Wales, and on the east coast also attracted thousands of visitors. Rescue services had to deal with a number of incidents. One Brazilian holidaymaker was lucky to escape unhurt after she fell part-way down a 120ft cliff in Torquay, Devon. The 32-year-old managed to call for help using her mobile phone while "clinging precariously" to the cliff edge, Devon and Cornwall police said.
